USTA
SENIOR 4.0 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
TUSCON, ARIZONA OCTOBER 29-30, 2004

Cabrini
Aces Compete for Senior 4.0 National Title in Tucson, Arizona.
The
Cabrini Aces won 2 matches and lost 2 matches in Tucson, Arizona on October 29
and 30.
Representing Southern California, Cabrini Aces defeated Caribbean 2-1 and
Southwest 2-1.
A loss to Southern, represented by a team from Chattanooga, Tennessee,
was pivotal in the final standings. Southern defeated Cabrini Aces 2-1 with the
deciding match ending in a super tiebreak score of 12-10.
Another loss to Middle States by score of 2-1, kept Cabrini Aces from
advancing to the next level. Southern defeated
Texas 2-1 in the
semi-finals and Midwest 3-0 in the finals to win the National Championship. It
was clear to all the members of Cabrini Aces that only a few points kept the
team from defeating Southern, the National Champs. Team members who made the
trip to Arizona included Captain Ron Simmons, Co-Captain Sal Zimmitti, David
Reddie, Ruben Zakarian, Jaime Hernandez, Tim McCarron, Rich Ortiz and Don
Hildreth.
The
four-day event in Tucson, Arizona was a most enjoyable experience for all the
tennis players and their wives who attended. There were 17 men’s teams and 17
women’s teams that qualified to participate in the National
Championships from
over 1,600 teams within the United States and Puerto Rico. A Halloween
dinner/dance party, sponsored by the USTA, was held on Saturday evening.
Some of the tennis players came with amusing and creative costumes.
Although the Cabrini Aces did not attain a National Championship, the
camaraderie and socializing that took place among team members, their wives and
opposing players will be remembered for a long time.
The Cabrini Aces have a fierce motivation now to make it to the National
Championships again.

The Tennis Committee organized several tennis
social events in the past years (the first one was July 11, 2000). For these
tennis socials, residents of Cabrini and their friends are invited over to our
tennis courts for fun tennis challenges. Men and women of all levels
are invited to compete in these Round-Robin tournaments. Participants are
required to bring one can of tennis balls and a $5.00 entry fee. Food and
refreshments are provided by the Tennis Committee for participants after the
tournament.
Past winners of these social tournaments are:
Ron Simmons, Sal Zimmitti, Patricia Zimmitti, Greg Gasparian, John Ohanian,
Art La Come, Ron Reiner, Gloria Demeter, Tim McCarron, Frank Quijanos and Joe
Malinko.
We would like to have a tennis social this year
also. Those interested please call Joe Malinko (818-767-3077) to select a date
best for most participants. We are also in the process of setting up an
interclub tournament with a tennis club in Glendale during the month of
September of this year. We invite all level tennis players residing at Cabrini
to call Joe Malinko to sign up to form our tennis team.
Exact date will be posted for both of these events
soon. Please stay in touch. Until these events, Keep on Practicing. The
courts and lights are in good condition and the weather can not be any better.
If you want to improve your strokes, please call
Dave Smith our tennis director (1-310-569-8804) or his assistant Sal Zimmitti
(818-434-1340). They would be more than happy to help you.
